DKC to host Senator Mike Duffy

Written by admin on September 22nd, 2009

Mike DuffyThe Dalhousie-King’s Conservatives will be hosting former journalist, Senator Mike Duffy, on October 2nd, at 7 pm, at the Dalhousie Student Union Building.

Senator Duffy started as a journalist in his home province of Prince Edward Island, before moving to Halifax, and finally Ottawa, where he was most recently the host of Mike Duffy Live, a respected political talk show on Sundays. Senator Duffy was appointed to the upper chamber in 2008 on the advice of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and he is currently one of four senators for Prince Edward Island.

Senator Duffy’s event at Dal will present a great opportunity for students. Tickets are priced at $5 for students and $20 for adults, far below regular prices for his talks.

Back for another round

Written by Ben on September 13th, 2009

It’s going to be a great year for the Dalhousie–King’s Conservatives! First of all, welcome to all the new faces who have signed up for our mailing list. Our club aims to be open and inviting, and provide fun events around which conservative (note the small ‘c’) minded students can gather, and meet new faces.

van Loan eventThis year, we have a new logo (see right), a new website, which is still partly under development, and a lot of support. We have already hosted the Hon. Peter van Loan, Minister of Public Safety. We are looking forward to our event Tuesday evening with former Minister of Health, the Hon. Chris d’Entremont. This event will be Tuesday, September 14th, at 7 pm in the Grawood. This event is informal, and we invite all to come out and have a beer or other beverage. Please try to bring a friend with you as well.

We are looking forward to several big events this fall, assuming there is no federal election. In the absence of an election, the Hon. Mike Duffy, Senator for Prince Edward Island, will be headlining a major event for the club in early October. Stay posted for updates on this and other major events.

We look forward to a great turnout on Tuesday!

2008/2009 in review

Written by Ben on April 26th, 2009

This year was a great year for the DKC, starting off with a Federal election and ending with the threat of a provincial election.

In September, the DKC worked hard on Ted Larsen’s campaign in Halifax. While unsuccessful, with our help, the Conservative Party increased its share of the vote in Halifax, a share that has been unfortunately low since Stewart McInnes was defeated in the 1988 “free trade election”. One of the highlights of the campaign was an opportunity to attend a Chamber of Commerce breakfast, with keynote speaker the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, the current Prime Minister, who announced the plan to cut the diesel excise tax at the meeting.

Our speaker series was successful this year, featuring Hon. Angus MacIsaac, Murray Scott and Brooke Taylor, Professor Rick Nason, Charles Cirtwill, MLA Chuck Porter, and former Premier and Senator Hon. John Buchanan. Two other speakers were hoping to come out, but had to cancel due to inclement weather: Hon. Stewart McInnes and Jane Purves.

Next year, we hope to have the most successful speaker series ever, but we need your help! Financial contributions are always welcome, and cheques can be made out to “The Dalhousie–King’s Conservatives” and sent to “Dalhousie–King’s Conservatives, c/o PC Headquarters, 801–1660 Hollis Street, Halifax, NS, B3J 1V7″. Donations are unfortunately not tax–deductible.

If you are a student, come on out to our events, and join our mailing list. Better yet, bring a few friends with you!

Dr. Rick Nason speaks to the Dalhousie–King's Conservatives and other students

The Dalhousie–King’s Conservatives were delighted to host Dr. Rick Nason of the Dalhousie Faculty of Management and principal of RSD Solutions, a financial consulting firm, on February 5th, 2009. Dr. Nason’s talk touched on a broad range of subjects, mainly centred on the current financial crisis.

A significant subject of discussion was the perils of financial regulation. While much regulation is well intended, Dr. Nason argued that “every time a regulator makes a law, a smart guy finds four ways around it” and added that the intense regulation brought in in recent years caused the financial sector to become inflexible and ultimately brought it to its knees.

“It’s time we stop regulating just to be seen as doing something!” he argued. Due to the government-mandated growth of the subprime mortgage sector in the United States, 30% of American mortgages are underwater, meaning that the mortgage is worth more than the house. Dr. Nason suggested that the bailout is so big and unknowable that it’s “like throwing a pot of spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks… The same amount of money, spent three years ago, would have had a huge effect… but now, it’s worthless!”

Dr. Nason, while pessimistic about the financial future of the Middle East, was bullish about Canada, specifically Atlantic Canada. “In Atlantic Canada, we’re in a state of perpetual depression, and it will work in our favour.” He argued that the people of Atlantic Canada are hard-working realists with an excellent quality of life. There are many people in the region who could live anywhere in the world, but they’ve chosen to stay or move here, because they love it. Atlantic Canada is used to adapting and changing, he added, which is critical in an economic crisis.

The DKC is delighted to host respected lecturers such as Dr. Nason. Next year we will be hosting Hon. Stewart McInnes and other respected politicians.
